Blog #41 – Staying loose under pressure

Walk off home run moment in debut with new team

This was one of my favorite moments in my playing career. This was my first game with the YORK REVOLUTION (ATLANTIC LEAGUE -INDEPENDENT PROFESSIONAL BASEBALL LEAGUE).

It was a high pressure moment because I was new to the team (it was my first game) and I was put in a situation where I could win the game. Long story short I was the first player in Rev’s history to hit a walk homer on my debut.

_ _ _ _ _

Today we spoke about the importance of staying loose when playing sports, games or any competition.

This is often a cliche and overlooked part of what makes great players great players. Your ability to stay “loosey goosey” during tense times of the game is what separates most players from one another.

So why do we stay tight when we play when we know that it won’t help us perform at our optimal level?

It’s a matter of FOCUS. What are we focusing on that given moment. In my experience those moments where I was tight I was predominantly thinking about how much “I had to succeed in order for me to win” and I didn’t want to let myself down or my team down… “This is my only shot This is my only chance”.. This was the self-talk…

This type of self-talk puts a lot of pressure on US to perform and puts you in a scarcity mindset. This is a mindset of lack or limited opportunities.

This is delusional thinking. This is our fear centers of our brain hijacking our ability to see reason. Because the reality is there is more opportunities and the will be more opportunities for us to compete and play again.

– Scarcity vs Abundance –
Focusing on this is what’s called abundance thinking. This is what will help calm your nerves and keep you loose because you’re not hyper focused on the limited thinking or limited opportunity
